Tongariro Alpine Crossing Booking System

6 October 2023

The Tongariro Alpine Crossing booking system has gone live this week. This has been developed in conjunction with the Stakeholder Reference Group to ensure it meets both the needs of the customer, concessionaires and other stakeholders.

Concessionaires have an important role as changes are made to better manage the Tongariro Alpine Crossing and DOC will provide support to all concessionaires to navigate the new process.

A key point of the new system is that concessionaires won’t need to set up any systems to support bookings. They will only need to check that their customers have a DOC booking

Read a summary below:

  • Concessionaires won’t need to set up any systems to support bookings. They will only need to check that their customers have a DOC booking.
  • Guiding and transport operators can make bookings on behalf of their customers if needed and bookings that you are currently holding can be input into the system.
  • Transport operators may wish to embed the link to the DOC booking system into their own booking page so that their customers do not need to navigate away from their site to make a booking.
  • Visitors who turn up to the Tongariro Alpine Crossing without a booking will not be penalised and DOC will not be implementing a cap in 2023/2024. Manaaki Rangers will be onsite by 1 November and they will be able to help visitors complete a booking via their phone if they have not already done so – year 1 is about education and behaviour change!
  • Visitors who have a Tongariro Northern Circuit hut or campsite booking are exempt from a booking through the new system.
