A lot is being done to educate visiting drivers about New Zealand road rules and driving conditions. We’re working with members, the wider industry and other stakeholders on initiatives to improve road safety for everyone.
TIA led development of the www.drivesafe.org.nz website which provides international visitors with basic information about New Zealand road rules and etiquette, along with links to more details about everything that drivers unfamiliar with our roads need to know. The website is in English, with translations of key information into eight other languages.
Code of Practice
Working with industry, we spearheaded the rental vehicle Code of Practice. The Code establishes a set of agreed standards and practices for operators to follow when informing visitors about driving in New Zealand and assessing their preparedness. Around 70% of the rental vehicle fleet have signed up to the Code.
Safer Journeys – Visiting Drivers Project
We are a member of the government’s Safer Journeys Visiting Drivers Project which is focusing on ways to improve road safety for visiting drivers and New Zealanders.
The project is led by the New Zealand Transport Agency and involves representatives from the tourism and rental vehicle industries, local government and central government, including Tourism New Zealand. Its scope is broad, with potential actions ranging from providing accurate travel time information, to introducing safer speeds on high risk visitor routes.
Initiatives rolled out around the country
Many of the project's on-the-ground initiatives which were first implemented in Otago, Southland and the West Coast are now being rolled out around the country. Read more.
Rental vehicle and accommodation guidelines
We have produced best practice guidelines for both rental vehicle operators and accommodation providers to help them educate international visitors on driver safety.
